It recharges at its base and resumes cleaning when it's at its Best Self Cleaning Robot Mop. But its obstacle-avoidance system gets caught in socks and cords and it's unable to operate under low thresholds.

1. iRobot Roomba 11S

The 11S is one of the cheaper self-emptying robots available and a lot of people seem to like it. It is a great choice for getting under furniture and is a great choice for those who have hard floors or for daily cleaning. The suction might be a bit weaker than those of our top picks, but it's still able to get the job done. It also has a huge dirt bin and a battery which lasts for over an hour. The app allows you to schedule your daily cleaning or choose a specific room. You can also mark your home to help the device avoid areas that you don't wish it to visit.

The app is simple to use and has a clear layout. It doesn't come with any advanced capabilities, but it's simple enough to use and makes it easy to track the status of your robot vacuum with self empty. It also has a helpful tutorial to guide you through the basics.

Bounce Navigation's cleaning pattern isn't always intuitive. Sometimes it follows straight lines and other times, it focuses on the edges of the space. But it cleans your entire floor. It's not the greatest at navigating obstacles, however - it struggled to get under our piano pedals as well as pet food bowls, and got tangled up in our 2.25-inch shag rug several times.

It also has an easy-to-use remote control to use and allows you to program daily cleanings using the app. The battery lasts about an hour and the dustbin is easy to empty by taking it from its dock.

2. Roborock S7 maxV Ultra

Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra robot mop and vacuum is a fantastic robot vacuum self emptying that comes with a a surprising array of features for automation. It is available in three models that include the basic S7, the S7 MaxV Plus, and the S7 MaxV Ultra. Only the latter has an Empty Wash Fill Dock (or an alternative Auto-Empty Dock). These docks allow the robot to return to its base following cleaning and empty the debris into a dust bag or reservoir, empty its dirty water tank, and clean its mopping pad.

The S7's sensors work in tandem to stay clear of obstacles and clean the floors. It can recognize floor types and save a map of rooms and zones. It can even determine dirt levels. It can also plan and execute spot cleaning sessions. It performed well in our tests, but it didn't exactly match the Roomba j7+ in our carpet deep clean test.

You can program the S7 with the companion app to run a cleaning cycle in accordance with your schedule. You can choose a cleaning mode like automatic or eco, and a weekday, day or time. You can also select whether the robot will cease operation if its power goes out or when it comes across an obstruction.

You can still make use of the S7 if you don't own a smartphone by connecting the charging dock to the remote control. It's simple to set up, has an enormous bin that is easy to empty (albeit a bit loudly) into a trash can when it is full, and can easily be programmed to do a complete home clean on a schedule or as needed.

The IQ XL can connect to your home WiFi that lets you monitor it through the Shark app and view its battery level as it cleans. The app allows you to set up a cleaning routine, receive push notifications regarding its current status, pause cleaning and resume cleaning or set it to clean only one area. It can also be controlled with voice commands through Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The app will show the user which the current power mode is such as Eco Normal, Normal, or Maximum - however we found that none of these settings made an obvious difference in cleaning performance.

The IQ XL will automatically empty the trash bin at the end of each cleaning cycle into the base, which will then self-empty. The bin can store up to 60 days of debris, meaning you won't have to empty it more than once unless your pets have hair that is long. If you do have to empty it, all you need to do is untie the side bin, put it over a trash can, and press a button that will let you eject its contents.

There's nothing to dislike about the Shark IQ XL, although it is a little less robust than the Roomba 694. It removes a lot of debris on bare flooring and does a decent job of maneuvering itself however it isn't even close to the iRobot Roomba i7 in terms of performance on carpeted floors. The i7 also feels more durable, is more robust and requires less maintenance. It has lower recurring costs, charges faster, and offers comparable battery performance. It also has more advanced features for automation, like no-go zones and the ability to choose specific rooms to be cleaned.

iRobot j7+

This robot mop/vac combo is a rare beast, since it does both jobs very efficiently. iRobot Combo J7+ comes with all the smarts and features of its j7 counterpart, including LiDAR map and self-emptying. It also comes with additional features for vacuuming and mopping.

The j7+ uses the new acoustic sensor to detect the type of floor and allows it to mop or vacuum the room during its initial pass. It also makes use of this information to prioritize cleaning rooms with carpets and rug flooring over rooms with hard floors.

The j7+ performed admirably in our tests of both carpeted and hard flooring, and was able to remove all the dirt we tossed at it. It isn't able to deal with pet hair, large pieces of debris and sand. But it is able to clean them with more effort. It has excellent navigational capabilities and two cliff sensors to prevent it from falling down stairs or becoming caught on furniture legs.

The j7+ has a few minor flaws. One of them is that it can be caught on rugs or cords and does not always turn off the mopping function when it is done vacuuming. In all other respects, it's an excellent product that ticks all the right boxes.

iRobot's j7+ also comes with one of the top self-emptying systems we've seen. It dumps its 14oz/0.4-liter dust canister into the base station, and it automatically empties for you. This will reduce the amount of trash you have to dispose of. You'll only need to change the dust disposal bag at the dock once every 60 days, depending on how often you use the j7+.
